Resolution regarding racial equality as part of the Intergovernmental Cooperation Council (ICC)

Body
WHEREAS, the Intergovernmental Cooperation Council (ICC) condemns the violent death of George Floyd and we join with those calling for reforms that will reshape our communities to provide safe, equitable, and just service to all residents, including people of color; and,

WHEREAS, as representatives of the one of the 19 municipalities of Milwaukee County, we decry the abhorrent actions that resulted in George Floyd's death. We are sickened to witness the death of a citizen and we mourn with Mr. Floyd's family, friends, and supporters. We acknowledge the pain, anger, and sorrow our Black neighbors feel at this time; and,

WHEREAS, the ICC remains committed to working together with the residents of Milwaukee County's municipalities to develop a path forward that is inclusive and supportive of all. We are united in recognizing that disparities resulting from systemic racism threaten the safety, health, and well-being of the Black members of our communities every day, and we see the devastating impacts racism has on all communities within our borders. For a community to thrive, all within it must thrive. If some suffer, all suffer. So long as racism remains unchecked and unaddressed, so long as fear and injustice exist, so long will we all fail to reach our full potential as individuals and communities at large.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED to our Black neighbors, our hearts are with you and our ears are open. We hear you, and want so much to hear more from you. We need your voice to help us shape the decisions that need to be made now to change the systems in place that we understand simply do not treat all people equal. Your voice matters. Your experiences matter. Your lives matter. We look forward to constructive conversations and collaborative change.
