Resolution to set the width of the new pavement on South 73rd Street at 34 feet wide adjacent to the residential properties on the street.

Body

WHEREAS, The existing pavement on South 73rd Street was built to a 40 foot width in 1963, and

WHEREAS, The Engineering Department has notified the property owners on S. 73rd Street in two separate letters and at a Public Hearing on February 21, 2017 and at a Neighborhood Meeting on March 28, 2017 of the City’s desire to narrow the new pavement from 40 feet wide to 34 feet, and

WHEREAS, The City’s existing policy under Section 2803: Standard Construction Specifications under Number 5.2.1: Street Construction stipulates that the standard width of a new residential pavement from curb to curb shall be 34 feet wide, and

WHEREAS, The City would save 16% in pavement costs by narrowing the pavement from 40 feet wide to 34 feet wide, and

WHEREAS, Narrower streets have been proven to help promote slower driving speeds which, in turn, will reduce the severity of crashes.  Narrower streets have other benefits as well, including reduced pedestrian crossing distances and less storm water from rain.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Mayor and Common Council of the City of West Allis that the new pavement on South 73rd Street shall be constructed at 34 feet wide from curb to curb adjacent to the residential properties on the street.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That the Director of Public Works/City Engineer be and is hereby authorized and directed to cause said street to be improved in accordance with the plans and specifications.
