Resolution Authorizing the "No Mow May" Property Maintenance Enforcement Event in the City of West Allis for May 2021.
Body
WHEREAS, the City of West Allis appreciates and seeks to promote programs which create a more sustainable environment for native species in the City; and
WHEREAS, research has proven that the most critical time to provide foraging resources for bees and other pollinators in a community is in the early spring; and
WHEREAS, providing resources for bees and other pollinators encourages native species growth; and
WHEREAS, research has proven that intensively managed lawns are shown to have clear negative ecological effects, especially in urban areas; and
WHEREAS, several other communities have shown great success with similar programs in recent years; and
WHEREAS, the "No Mow May" initiative has educated other local communities on best practices to improve conservation of urban pollinators, both now and for the future.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED By the Mayor and Common Council of the City of West Allis that the Department of Building Inspection and Neighborhood Services is hereby authorized and directed to begin a "No Mow May" event in the City of West Allis for May of 2021.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the program in the City of Wet Allis will be run under the following guidelines:
1. The program will end on May 31st, 2021.
2. All occupied properties are permitted to participate, and participation is voluntary.
3. Front yards and side yards abutting a street for corner lots shall remain at 6" maximum grass height. Anything between the main walls of the house to the street shall be cut.
4. Participating properties are required to register online. There will be no fee to participate.
5. The City will provide small yard signs to the first 500 properties who sign up at no cost to the property owner. The cost for the City is not to exceed $500 for the signs. These signs will provide information about the program and to inform...
